Grand Cherokee: a timeline that explains why yours stalled
- September 2014. Chrysler recalls the 2011 Grand Cherokee and Durango with 3.6L and 5.7L engines (NHTSA 14V-530) because the fuel pump relay inside the Totally Integrated Power Module can fail, stalling the vehicle without warning.
- March 2015. The campaign widens (15V-115).
- November 2019. Chrysler recalls the same 2011–2013 vehicles again (19V-813) because the earlier repair could itself fail.
That is why so many Grand Cherokees reach us as "it just died and will not restart." The 2011 model has 1,638 NHTSA complaints on file, 427 of them electrical; the 2014 has 2,374 complaints and nineteen recalls. If the relay is the only thing wrong, a dealer performs the recall free and you have a running Jeep to sell. If more has gone, tell us; the body, interior, and drivetrain on a Grand Cherokee still price well in New York's parts market.
Wrangler: read the steering column before you read the odometer
The 2012 Wrangler's 832 complaints are led by a combined steering and power-train category (149) and the engine (97), with ten recalls, six of them airbags. Buyers know this generation. A Wrangler that tracks straight, has had its front-end work done, and has a body without frame rust is a used vehicle, not a junk one, and we price it that way. One that shakes above 45 mph is priced on the rest of what is there.
What we do not claim about Wrangler resale
You will read that Wranglers hold their value better than anything on the road. iSeeCars' 2026 retention study does not put the Wrangler in its top 25, and its 2025 longevity study puts the Wrangler Unlimited at 4.5% of vehicles reaching 250,000 miles, just under the 4.8% average. A twelve-year-old Wrangler is worth what its parts and condition make it worth, which is often good, but it is not immune to being a junk car. We would rather tell you that here than in the offer.
Title and pickup
Jeeps from 1973 on have a New York title. Bring it or the transferable registration where the year allows, take the plates off before the truck arrives, and return them to the DMV. The form starts with the VIN; for a Grand Cherokee it will tell us which recall campaigns were open on your exact vehicle.

My Grand Cherokee died and will not restart. Why does that keep happening?
Most likely the fuel pump relay inside the Totally Integrated Power Module. Chrysler recalled the 2011-2013 Grand Cherokee and Durango in September 2014 (NHTSA 14V-530), widened it in March 2015 (15V-115), then recalled the same vehicles again in November 2019 (19V-813) because the first repair could itself fail. Electrical leads the 2011 model's file at 427 of 1,638 complaints.
Is the recall repair still free?
An open recall is performed at no charge by a dealer, however old the vehicle is. Run your VIN through NHTSA's lookup before you decide to sell — if the relay is the only thing wrong, you have a running Jeep to sell instead of a dead one, and that is a materially better offer.
Do Wranglers really hold their value at the end of their life?
Less than the internet says. The Wrangler does not appear in iSeeCars' 2026 top 25 for value retention, and its 2025 longevity study puts the Wrangler Unlimited at 4.5% reaching 250,000 miles, just under the 4.8% average. A twelve-year-old Wrangler is worth what its condition and parts make it worth, which is often good, but it is not immune to being a junk car.
My Wrangler shakes above 45 mph. Does that matter?
To the offer, some. A combined steering and power-train category leads the 2012 Wrangler's 832 complaints at 149, so buyers know the generation. A Wrangler that tracks straight and has had its front-end work done prices as a used vehicle; one that shakes is priced on the rest of what is there.
The 2014 Grand Cherokee has nineteen recalls. Will you still buy it?
Yes. Nineteen recalls and 2,374 complaints led by seats and power train is a lot of history, and none of it stops the sale. The body, interior, and drivetrain on a Grand Cherokee price well in New York's parts market whatever the campaign list looks like.
