What actually decides your offer
Five things move the number, and only one of them is the make. If you want the make-specific version, pick yours from the list below. This is what applies to every vehicle we buy in New York.
Whether it runs. This is the largest single swing, larger than model year. A vehicle that starts and drives is worth more than the sum of its parts, because it can be resold rather than dismantled. A vehicle that does not is priced on parts and weight. It is the first question the form asks for a reason.
Weight and body type. A half-ton truck is roughly two and a half tons of mostly steel, and that sets a floor a dead sedan does not have. It is why our lowest offers go to old cars and vans, not to trucks.
The catalytic converter. Since October 17, 2022, New York dismantlers and scrap processors must record the seller's identity and the year, make, model, and VIN of the vehicle a converter came from. A buyer cannot legally resell a loose one without that paper trail, so a vehicle missing its converter costs the buyer a replacement and the offer reflects it. If yours was stolen, say so in the form and keep the police report.
How long it has been sitting. A car that died last month still has a battery, brakes that turn, and a converter bolted on. The same car two winters later usually has none of the three. If you are deciding whether to sell now or in the spring, this is the factor that decides it for you.
The title and the plates. A clean title with no lien and the plates already off is a single number. Anything else is a conversation, and conversations at the curb are how offers get renegotiated.
What the offers actually look like
Our published offers run from $300 for a non-running 2009 sedan up into the thousands for a running eleven-year-old SUV. The spread is not model-year luck. The vehicles at the top of that range started and drove; the ones at the bottom did not. Two identical 2017 Escapes quoted in the same city on the same day came back twenty dollars apart purely on condition answers, which is what a VIN-based quote is supposed to do.
Be careful with any buyer who quotes a firm price before seeing the VIN and the condition. A number given over the phone with no vehicle detail is a number that changes when the truck arrives.
What New York needs before we tow
A title, for anything from model year 1973 on. That covers effectively every vehicle we buy. If yours is lost, DMV form MV-902 replaces it. If a lien was ever recorded, we need the release, even if the loan was paid off years ago.
Your plates, removed. Take them off before the truck arrives and surrender them to the DMV. Plates that leave on the vehicle keep your registration and your insurance running, and neither one stops on its own because the car is gone.
Nothing else. No inspection, no repairs, no cleaning. A failed New York inspection is one of the most common reasons people call us in the first place, and the repair estimate is often worth more than the vehicle.

Do you buy cars that do not run?
Yes, and most of what we buy does not. Whether it starts is the single largest factor in the offer, not a condition of making one. We tow it either way and the tow is free.
How is the offer actually calculated?

Can I sell without the title?

What do I do with my license plates?

Why is my offer lower than a price I was quoted on the phone?
Usually because the phone quote was not based on your vehicle. A firm number given before anyone has the VIN or the condition is a number that moves when the truck shows up. Ours is built from the VIN up front, which is less exciting and more accurate.
