What a seventeen-year-old Silverado actually got, and why
On September 1, 2026 a 2009 Silverado 1500 Extended Cab in Syracuse was offered $380. Here is how a number like that is built, because it is the same arithmetic for every Chevrolet we buy.
Start with weight. A half-ton extended cab is roughly two and a half tons of mostly steel. That sets a floor that a dead Malibu or Equinox does not have; a truck is never worth nothing.
Add or subtract the drivetrain. A 2009 Silverado with the 5.3L V8 that still turns over is worth more to a rebuilder than the same truck seized, and that is the largest single swing. The Syracuse truck was not running.
Subtract what is missing or rusted. Upstate trucks of this age often need cab corners and rocker panels. The buyer prices that in. A stolen catalytic converter is a bigger deduction now than it used to be: since October 2022, New York scrap processors must record the VIN of the vehicle a converter came from before they can buy it, so a truck without one costs the buyer a replacement.
Then the title. Clean title, no lien, plates off. The Syracuse truck had all three, which is why the offer was a single number and not a conversation.
The 2014 Silverado and its complaint file
If you have a 2014 Silverado 1500, NHTSA has 1,558 owner complaints on it, led by service brakes (200) and steering (160), with six recalls. None of that makes the truck unsellable; it means the buyer will ask whether the brake and steering issues were repaired. If they were, keep the receipts near the title. If they were not, the offer values the truck on the rest of what is there.
Chevrolets that are not junk yet
iSeeCars' 2025 longevity study found 12.9% of Silverado 1500s reach 250,000 miles, nearly three times the 4.8% average. A running Silverado with 200,000 miles is a used truck, and we pay for it as one. A 2012 Malibu or Impala with the same mileage is closer to the floor. Say in the form whether it starts, drives, and stops; those three answers decide which category you are in.

Why was a Silverado only worth $380?
That was a 2009 Silverado 1500 Extended Cab in Syracuse on September 1, 2026, and the number breaks down cleanly: two and a half tons of steel sets the floor, a non-running 5.3L removes the drivetrain premium, upstate rust on the cab corners and rockers comes off, and a clean title with the plates off keeps it a single number instead of a conversation.
My 2014 Silverado has brake and steering problems. Will you still buy it?
Yes. NHTSA has 1,558 complaints on the 2014 Silverado 1500, led by service brakes at 200 and steering at 160, with six recalls. None of it makes the truck unsellable. A buyer will ask whether the repairs were done, so keep any receipts near the title; if they were not done, the offer values the rest of the truck.
Is a running Silverado with 200,000 miles a junk car?
No. iSeeCars' 2025 study found 12.9% of Silverado 1500s reach 250,000 miles, nearly three times the 4.8% average. We pay for it as a used truck. A Malibu or Impala at the same mileage sits much closer to the weight floor — the three answers that decide which category you are in are whether it starts, drives, and stops.
Does it matter that the catalytic converter was cut off?
It costs you, and more than it used to. Since October 2022 a New York scrap processor has to record the VIN of the vehicle a converter came from before buying it, so the buyer has to source a replacement. Declare it in the form rather than letting the driver find it — a surprise at pickup is how offers get renegotiated.
Do you buy Chevys that failed New York inspection?
Yes, and a failed inspection is one of the most common reasons people call. The repair estimate is often worth more than the vehicle. We buy it whether it passed or not, and the tow is free either way.
