Three things that move a Toyota offer more than the mileage

Most Toyotas we buy in New York are between twelve and twenty years old, and the odometer is rarely the deciding factor. These are the three that are.

1. The hybrid system, if it has one. A Prius, Camry Hybrid, or Highlander Hybrid carries an inverter and a traction battery that are worth money to a rebuilder even when the car will not start. The 2010–2014 Prius was recalled twice for its inverter's Intelligent Power Module (NHTSA campaigns 14V-053 and 18V-684); a hybrid that shut down on the road and has sat since is still a normal purchase for us, and the offer reflects the battery and inverter, not just the shell. Tell us whether the hybrid warning lights were on when it stopped.

2. The catalytic converter, and whether it is still there. Since October 17, 2022, New York requires vehicle dismantlers and scrap processors to record the seller's identity and the year, make, model, and VIN of any vehicle a converter came from. That is why a Toyota with the converter cut out gets a lower number: the buyer has to replace it, and cannot legally resell a loose one without that paper trail. If yours was stolen and you have a police report, mention it in the form.

3. Whether it still moves under its own power. iSeeCars' 2025 longevity study found 12.7% of Highlanders and 12.2% of Priuses reach 250,000 miles, against a 4.8% average across all vehicles. Camry is 9.0%, RAV4 7.3%. A running Toyota with 200,000 miles is not a junk car to most of the buyers we sell to; it is a car with years left, and the offer is priced that way.

A real Toyota offer from the log

On August 25, 2026 a 2009 Camry in Utica was offered $300. That is a fifteen-year-old sedan that was not running, with no title problems, being valued mostly by weight. A running one of the same year lands well above that.

Paperwork for an older Toyota

New York issues titles for model year 1973 and newer, so a 2009 Camry has one. If it is lost, the DMV form MV-902 replaces it, and we can usually pick up on a transferable registration when the vehicle is old enough. Start the form with the VIN and we will tell you exactly which document to have on the hood.

Have Questions?

Get answers and get on your way.

Is a Prius with a dead hybrid battery worth anything?

Yes, and usually more than a non-hybrid of the same age. The traction battery and the inverter both have resale value to a rebuilder even when the car will not start. Toyota recalled the 2010-2014 Prius twice over the inverter's Intelligent Power Module (NHTSA campaigns 14V-053 and 18V-684), so a Prius that shut itself down on the road is a routine purchase for us.

Why was the offer on my old Camry so low?

Because a non-running sedan is priced mostly by weight. A 2009 Camry in Utica was offered $300 on August 25, 2026 — no title problems, just a car that would not start. The same year Camry running and driving lands well above that, which is why the form asks whether it starts before it asks anything else.

Does a missing catalytic converter lower my Toyota offer?

Yes. Since October 17, 2022, New York dismantlers and scrap processors must record the seller's identity and the year, make, model, and VIN of the vehicle a converter came from. A buyer cannot legally resell a loose converter without that paper trail, so a Toyota missing its converter carries a replacement cost. If yours was stolen, mention the police report in the form.

My Toyota has 220,000 miles but still runs. Should I junk it?

Probably not yet. In iSeeCars' 2025 longevity study, 12.7% of Highlanders and 12.2% of Priuses reach 250,000 miles against a 4.8% average across all vehicles. A running Toyota at that mileage is a used car to the buyers we sell to, not a junk car, and the offer reflects that.

Do I need the title for a 2009 Camry?

New York issues titles for model year 1973 and newer, so yes, one exists for your car. If it is lost, DMV form MV-902 replaces it. For older vehicles a transferable registration is sometimes enough — start the form with the VIN and we will tell you which document to have ready.
