Two stories, and most Hyundais we buy are one of them

The engine. Hyundai recalled the 2013–2014 Sonata and Santa Fe Sport (NHTSA 17V-226) because machining errors could cause premature bearing wear inside the engine, and in 2018 recalled vehicles already repaired under that campaign (18V-934) because the high-pressure fuel pipe could have been damaged during the engine swap. The complaint file shows how it played out: engine is the top category on the 2013 Sonata, 484 of 1,903 complaints, and on the 2014 Elantra, 99 of 383. A Sonata that seized on the Thruway is a common car for us. If yours is inside the recall and the engine was never replaced, a dealer may still do it free, and a Sonata with a new engine is worth more running than dead. If it is outside coverage, we buy it as it sits.

The theft. In model year 2015, engine immobilizers were standard on 96% of other manufacturers' vehicles and on 26% of Hyundai and Kia models. Among 2015–2019 vehicles, theft claims ran nearly twice as often for Hyundai and Kia as for everything else, and in 2023 NICB counted the Elantra as the most-stolen vehicle in the country at 48,445 thefts. A recovered-theft Hyundai in New York usually comes back with a broken steering column, a punched ignition, and sometimes a salvage brand. All of that is sellable. The software upgrade Hyundai offered cut whole-vehicle theft by 64% on vehicles that got it, so if yours is still on the road, get the update before you decide whether to sell.

What each does to the offer

A dead engine removes the drivetrain value and the "runs" premium; the body, interior, and catalytic converter still pay, and on a 2013 Sonata they pay reasonably well. Theft damage is cheaper to a buyer than it looks: a column and ignition are low-cost parts, and a running recovered Elantra is often a used car, not a junk one. What costs you is a salvage title without paperwork, so keep the police report and the insurance letter with the title.

The 2010 Elantra's steering, briefly

If you have a 2010 Elantra, its complaint file is led by steering (182 of 454). It does not stop the sale; it is one of the questions the form asks.

Hyundais from 1973 on carry a New York title. Bring it, or the registration where the year allows, and take the plates off before pickup.

Have Questions?

My Sonata's engine seized. Was there a recall?

Almost certainly relevant to you. Hyundai recalled the 2013-2014 Sonata and Santa Fe Sport (NHTSA 17V-226) because machining errors could cause premature bearing wear, then in December 2018 recalled vehicles already repaired under it (18V-934) over a fuel pipe that could have been damaged during the engine swap. Engine leads the 2013 Sonata's file at 484 of 1,903 complaints.

Will Hyundai replace the engine for free?

If the campaign is still open on your VIN, a dealer performs it at no charge. Check before you sell: a Sonata with a replaced engine is worth considerably more running than seized. If you are outside coverage, we buy it as it sits.

My Elantra was stolen and recovered. Can I still sell it?

Yes, and it is a common sale here. NICB counted the Elantra as the most-stolen vehicle in the country in 2023 at 48,445 thefts. Recovered cars come back with broken columns and punched ignitions, which are cheap parts to a buyer — a running recovered Elantra often prices as a used car. Keep the police report and any insurance letter with the title.

Why were so many Hyundais stolen?

Engine immobilizers. In model year 2015 they were standard on 96% of other manufacturers' models but only 26% of Hyundai and Kia models, and among 2015-2019 vehicles theft claims ran nearly twice as often for the two brands as for everyone else. If your car is still on the road, get the free anti-theft software update; IIHS found whole-vehicle theft fell 64% on vehicles that received it.

Does the 2010 Elantra steering issue affect the offer?

Not much on its own. Steering leads that year's file at 182 of 454 complaints, so it is one of the questions the form asks. It changes the buyer, not usually the number.
