Four things to check by VIN before you sell a Kia
Kias reach us for the same two reasons Hyundais do, so this page is a checklist rather than an explanation. Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup first; it takes a minute and can change the offer.
1. Engine recalls. Three campaigns cover most of the Kias we buy:
- 17V-224 — 2011–2014 Optima, 2012–2014 Sorento, 2011–2013 Sportage. Machining errors can cause premature bearing wear. This is the big one; engine is the top complaint category on the 2014 Optima (194 of 583), the 2013 Sorento (361 of 981), and the 2014 Soul (385 of 898).
- 19V-120 — 2012–2016 Soul with the 1.6L GDI engine. High exhaust temperatures can damage the catalytic converter and then the pistons.
- 20V-750 — 2012–2013 Sorento, 2012–2015 Forte, 2011–2013 Optima Hybrid, 2014–2015 Soul, 2012 Sportage. Engine-compartment fire while driving.
If a campaign is open on your car and the engine has not failed yet, a dealer repairs it free and you have a running Kia to sell. If the engine is already gone, we buy it as it is; the body, interior, and converter still pay.
2. The immobilizer update. Only 26% of Hyundai and Kia models had engine immobilizers as standard in model year 2015, against 96% for other manufacturers, and 2015–2019 Kias were stolen at nearly twice the rate of other makes. If yours is still driving, get the free software update; vehicles that received it saw whole-vehicle theft drop 64%. If yours was already stolen and recovered, keep the police report with the title. A recovered Soul with a broken column is a cheap repair to a buyer and often prices as a used car.
3. The catalytic converter. Recall 19V-120 damages it from the inside; thieves take it from the outside. Either way, since October 2022 a New York scrap processor must record the VIN a converter came from, so a Kia without one carries a replacement cost for the buyer. Say so in the form rather than letting the driver find it.
4. The title. Every Kia sold in New York is well past 1973, so a title exists. Lost it? DMV form MV-902 replaces it. Lien on it? We need the release. Plates come off before pickup and go back to the DMV.
Do those four, then start the form with the VIN. The offer is built from the exact vehicle, and the first three checks are the ones that move it.

Which engine recalls should I look up before selling my Kia?
Three cover most of what we buy. NHTSA 17V-224 covers the 2011-2014 Optima, 2012-2014 Sorento, and 2011-2013 Sportage for premature bearing wear. 19V-120 covers the 2012-2016 Soul with the 1.6L GDI engine, where high exhaust temperatures can damage the catalytic converter and then the pistons. 20V-750 covers an engine-compartment fire risk on several 2011-2015 models. Run the VIN; an open campaign is repaired free.
Is it normal for a Kia Soul's engine to fail?
It is the dominant complaint. Engine leads the 2014 Soul's NHTSA file at 385 of 898 complaints, the 2014 Optima's at 194 of 583, and the 2013 Sorento's at 361 of 981. A Kia that seized is an ordinary purchase for us; the body, interior, and converter still pay.
My Kia was stolen. Does that make it worthless?
No. Only 26% of Hyundai and Kia models had immobilizers as standard in model year 2015, against 96% for other manufacturers, and 2015-2019 Kias were stolen at nearly twice the rate of other makes. A recovered Soul with a broken column is a cheap repair to a buyer. Keep the police report with the title. If your Kia is still driving, the free software update cut whole-vehicle theft 64% on cars that got it.
The recall damaged my catalytic converter. What now?
Say so in the form. Recall 19V-120 damages the converter from the inside; thieves take it from the outside. Either way, since October 2022 a New York scrap processor must record the VIN a converter came from before buying it, so a Kia without one carries a replacement cost for the buyer.
What paperwork do you need for a Kia?
Every Kia sold here is well past model year 1973, so a New York title exists. Lost it? DMV form MV-902 replaces it. Lien on it? We need the release. Plates come off before pickup and go back to the DMV.
