Is my Nissan's CVT covered by the warranty extension?

Check the year and mileage. Under the Martinez class-action settlement Nissan extended CVT coverage from 60 months or 60,000 miles to 84 months or 84,000 miles on the 2014-2018 Rogue, 2017-2018 Altima, and 2018-2019 Sentra, Versa, and Versa Note. If you are inside that, a dealer may repair it for nothing, and a Nissan with a working transmission sells for more than one without.

The CVT is dead and a rebuild costs more than the car. Is it worth anything?

Yes. A failed CVT removes the transmission's value and the runs-and-drives premium, not the rest of the vehicle. An Altima or Rogue with a good body, a working engine, and an intact converter is a parts sale, and New York's used-parts market wants those parts.

Should I wait and sell it in the spring?

No. A Nissan that has sat since it failed usually loses its battery and its brakes, and often its catalytic converter. The offer follows. Sell it the month the transmission goes, not the year after.

How common is this? My Altima has been in the shop constantly.

Common enough to show up in the federal data. The 2013 Altima has 2,309 NHTSA complaints on file, one of the highest counts of any car we buy, and power train leads the 2014 Sentra at 134 of 380 and the 2015 Rogue at 97 of 551.

Will my Altima last to 250,000 miles if I keep it?

The odds are below average. iSeeCars' 2025 study puts the Altima at 3.5% reaching 250,000 miles against a 4.8% average. That is not a reason to expect a lower offer; it is a reason not to hold a running one hoping it appreciates.
